14/03/2013. Category: Gadgets. Topic: .

nVidia Kepler is the world’s fastest and most efficient high performance computing architecture. GPU accelerators based on Kepler are used in the world’s fastest computers. Think weather modelling, seismic processing, computational physics, satellite imaging and anything else where data and huge are found in the same sentence.

The nVidia Tesla K20X, for instance, drives the current record holder, a Cray XK7 system, called Titan, that achieves 17.59 Petaflop/s (quadrillions of calculations per second).  Read more…

Loony Tunes flash drives

24/01/2013. Category: Gadgets. Topic: .

No matter how young or old you are, Loony Tunes cartoon characters will always bring a smile to your dial. Stumbling across the Loony Tunes flash drives made by Emtec did just that. Awh, they’re cute :)

Emtec also licensed Angry Birds, Asterix, Pucca & Garu and Kooky characters for USB flash drives. As with the Loony Tunes flash drives, they’re only 46mm  (1.8 inches) high max and have small straps with which you can attach the character to a keyring or a bag handle.

Technically they’re not too shabby either, sporting 15MB/s read and 5MB/s write times. And they come in either 4GB or 8GB capacity. Read more…

Nikon D600

In an interesting marketing move Nikon teamed up with wildlife photographers Florian and Salomon Schulz to shoot a range of effects with the Nikon D600 in a series called “Chasing the light.”  The results are informative and entertaining, showing the capabilities of the camera in the hands of professionals.

The D600 is Nikon’s most compact full-frame HD-SLR to date. Its 24.3 megapixel FX-format CMOS sensor captures 5.5 frames-per-second (fps) on continuous shooting. And, as Nikon states, “Shoot 1080p HD videos with selectable frame rates of 30p, 25p or 24p and MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 compression. Bend time with 720p HD at 60p, 50p or 30p for ultra-smooth video playback of fast moving subjects, or create slow-motion footage during post processing.”  Read more…

The BlackBerry next door

Blackberry 10 Alpha Dev

BlackBerry is like the girl next door. You never really notice her until you get to know her. And when you do, you realize how nice she is. And you’ll also realize that a lot of other people also think that she is nice. Not only nice looking but a nice personality too.

The problem, however, is her dad. A bit temperamental, you see. A spendthrift. Loose ends, you might say. Squandered the family riches.  Read more…

iPad Mini

So many tablets for so many cures! A tablet for music, a tablet for entertainment, web browsing, book reading, etc. Have tablet, load app, got your fix.

If only there was an app for the tablet wars. Proview sues Apple who sues Samsung, and so it goes on. If you didn’t know them as gadget makers you would have been forgiven for mistaking the cases as just more usual tit-for-tat among pharmaceutical companies.  Read more…

Google Glass

Google Glass, the head-mounted display (HMD) gadget, is the bee’s knees. You look at it and think, “How cool is that?!”

But what do you want to use it for? How much will it cost? Isn’t it just a smaller, newer version of the helmet cam first used in 1987 by Mark Schulze when he made The Great Mountain Biking Video?

Well, yes it is. Much smaller and very much newer. The Google Glass headware is packed with features such as high definition camera, microphone, voice activation, and Internet connection. Read more…

Microsoft Surface looks the business

Microsoft Surface

Microsoft’s new tablet, called Surface, looks the business. To be available with either a nVidia or a dual-core Intel CPU, on the specs the Surface should be a good runner.

No point for guessing the operating system for the Surface. The nVidia-powered RT model will run on the new Windows 8 platform while the Pro model, powered by the dual-core processor, will come with Windows 8 Pro.  Read more…

nVidia GeForce GTX690

Driven by two of nVidia’s most powerful graphic GPUs, the dual GK104 Kepler architecture chips, the GeForce GTX690 is the world’s fastest graphics card.

Hang on! Didn’t AMD claim their Radeon HD 6990 to be the fastest just the other day? Yes, they did. And it was. But that was the other day and in the computer world a week is as long as a month at the office: an eternity.  Read more…
