10/05/2016. Category: Gadgets. Topic: .

Jen-Hsun Huang was a microprocessor designer at AMD when he left the company in 1993 to co-found nVidia with Chris Malachowsky and Curtis Priem. Today, nVidia is not only AMD’s biggest competitor in the graphics card market but is the largest company in its field. And that’s a good place to be, considering that video gaming is a $100 billion-a-year business, twice the size of the film industry.

What made nVidia so big and profitable? Being a step ahead of the competition for most of the time and more than often scooping the title of “World’s fastest graphics card.”

World’s fastest graphics card 2014 – nVidia GeForce GTX Titan Black

11/03/2014. Category: Gadgets. Topic: .

Fast and powerful yet cool and quiet. No, that’s not Chuck Norris in person but the Chuck Norris of graphics cards: the supercomputer-inspired-GK110 GPU, Kepler-driven nVidia GeForce GTX Titan Black.

The original Titan packed 2688 CUDA cores; the Titan Black has 2880. The original Titan had stock and boost clocks of 837MHz and 876MHz respectively; the Titan Black powers up to 889MHz and 980MHz.

Oppo N1 – a smartphone with tricks

05/03/2014. Category: Gadgets. Topic: .

The camera on the Oppo N1 smartphone boots up in 0.6 seconds. That’s no typo. OPPO claims it is “easily the fastest starting camera on the market.” That’s cool, because some phone cameras are so slow that by the time you have the camera ready the important moment has gone, either lost forever or captured by your competitor’s faster phone.

That’s not the only impressive feature of the Oppo 1. It has a touch pad on the rear of the camera – called an “O-Touch” – on which you can scroll your screen, has an O-Click remote control device, and is the world’s first smartphone with a rotating camera.  Read more…

Panasonic Lumix GH4 DSLM 4K camera

07/02/2014. Category: Gadgets. Topic: .

Phone cameras are making inroads into the snapshot market but traditional cameras remain hugely popular, spurred by tech advances and keener pricing. The sales of SLR cameras are, in fact, growing and demand for mirrorless compact cameras has increased by 60%.

The first mirrorless compact camera, the Epson R-D1, was introduced in 2004 but it was Panasonic’s Lumix DMC-G1 that really kicked off the DSLM (digital single lens mirrorless) market in 2008. It was the first digital camera to meet the MFT (Micro Four Thirds) standard.

Panasonic’s latest creation, the 16.05-megapixel Lumix GH4, is the first DSLM camera capable of recording high-resolution 4K video.

As you would expect from a Lumix, the GH4 looks pure pro –

The authoritative DPReview has a GH4 quick review, mentioning –

“… the bulk of the camera’s improvements will be most apparent to video shooters, but there are also some extra features added for the stills photographers…”

BBM app cracks into Android and iPhone

24/10/2013. Category: Gadgets. Topic: , .

60 million people use the Blackberry Messenger (BBM) service. BBM handles 10 billion messages per day. Even compared to WhatsApp’s 27 billion messages by 250 million users, the BBM numbers are significant. From these numbers you’ll notice that BBM users are far more active. No wonder, then, that BlackBerry is referred to as “CrackBerry,” alluding to the addictive (free) texting by its users.

Launching the BBM app to the huge Android and iPhone market should boost BBM numbers significantly and probably is making Fairfax Financial, the prospective new owner of BlackBerry, smile even more. The new app was downloaded more than 10 million times in the first 24 hours, achieving the number one app status in the US, UK, Canada and many other countries.  Read more…
