Car of the Year
The Car of the Year (COTY) choices made by the different magazines and organizations are always interesting. This year, 2016, the results were as surprising as the outcome of United States presidential elections if only that the odds on the predictions were long.
There are many different classes for which awards were made, included Small Cars, Electric Cars, Executive Cars, Sports cars, MPVs and SUVs. But here we’ll look at Car of the Year, usually chosen on top of the classes.
Firstly, remember that some magazines and organizations named their 2017 Car of the Year at the end of 2016 while others announced their COTY for 2016.
World Car of the Year
The WCOTY 2017 is the Mazda MX-5.
The Mazda MX-5 is a worldwide favorite. It also won the Australian CarsGuide COTY award and earlier in the year Automobile Magazine included in their list of 7 All-Star Cars, calling the MX-5 “Probably more fun than the Ferrari, McLaren, and Porsche because you can use it to its max.”
Car and Driver does not do a Car of the Year but lists 10Best, which includes the Mazda MX-5 Miata, Chevrolet Camaro, Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport, Ford Mustang Shelby GT GT350R and the Chevrolet Bolt EV.
EU Car of the Year
The Car of the Year organization, represented by EU magazine editors, COTY is the Opel/Vauxhall Astra. This is one of those cars that seem overpriced until you drive it.
Top Gear Car of the Year
Top Gear without the famous three mavericks – Clarkson, May and Hammond – is like Pirates of the Caribean without Johnny Depp or the war against terrorism without General Mad Dog Mattis or fighting ISIS without those crazy Russian pilots or… you get the drift.
Even so, Top Gear still is one of the world’s most-read car magazines and most-watched TV shows and the announcements of their COTY awards are closely followed by fans and manufacturers alike.

The Ferrari 488 GTB featured in many COTY top lists, is Top Gear Supercar of the Year and the 2016 Robb Report Car of the Year. It is a magnificent-looking machine.
Chevrolet Bolt EV
The Chevy Bolt also is a popular 2016/7 COTY choice. It is featured in the Car and Driver 10Best list (mentioned above) and is Best Car of the Year 2017 for MotorTrend.
The Bolt EV is in the finals for the NACTY (North American Car of the Year) – winners will be announced on January 9, 2017 – competing with the Genesis G90 and Volvo S90. [For Truck of the Year, the Ford F-series Super Duty will square up to the Honda Ridgeline and Nissan Titan.]
The Road and Track PCOTY (Performance Car of the Year), as they said, “became the most universally acclaimed automobile in PCOTY history,” seeing off some stiff competition: it is the fascinating Acura NSX.
More car awards
WhatCar named the Land Rover Discovery Sport 2.0 TD4 180 SE Tech Auto – a long title for a vehicle with an equally long price tag – as their favorite Large SUV while their top car award went to the Audi A4 3.0 TDI 218 Sport.
Honest John’s Most Highly Rated Car award went to the Renault Captur.
nRAVE Car of the Year
The nRave Car of the Year 2016 is the New Original 1957 Jaguar XKSS.
