The BlackBerry next door

BlackBerry is like the girl next door. You never really notice her until you get to know her. And when you do, you realize how nice she is. And you’ll also realize that a lot of other people also think that she is nice. Not only nice looking but a nice personality too.

The problem, however, is her dad. A bit temperamental, you see. A spendthrift. Loose ends, you might say. Squandered the family riches.

BlackBerry’s “dad” is, of course, RIM, Research In Motion. TheRecord explains:

… the value of RIM stock has plunged 74 per cent in the last year and a jaw-dropping 95 per cent since 2008, while RIM lost half a billion dollars in its last quarter… Two general meetings ago, a single RIM share sold for $57. On Tuesday (July 10), it fetched a measly $7.44.

Such figures would make any shareholder bonkers. But they like the kid. They like all the kids: Bold, Curve, Torch, Style, Storm, P’9981 and Playbook. And so do 70+ million BlackBerry users around the world. Everyone is in great anticipation to the new superkid to fly in and save the company.

The new kid is the BlackBerry 10 smartphone, to be launched in 2013, on which RIM stakes the little it has left in the kitty.

BlackBerry 10 Alpha Dev

The prototype device, BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha, runs on BB10, the new proprietary mobile operating system. It has a 4.2-inch screen with a resolution of 1280 x 768 pixels. It also features the free BlackBerry Internet Service and famous BBM (BlackBerry Messenger) service.
